Out of curiosity, how would you like the game mechanics to encourage it?

I could do an entire thread on this... Most of us tend to avoid having to endure the company of others as much as possible without incentives in place to encourage teamwork. I have some ideas which I don't consider game-breaking. I'd like to see the game foster community instead of fostering terrified hermits waiting to have their rabbit skins stolen. I think a large part of people continuing to play games is a feeling of obligation to your team mates, and I think this would help the game retain more players.

Basically I think there should be bonuses for spending time on Town Land. Increase the rate of learning, give bonuses to the chance of successfully completing actions like planing wood. Reduce the bile cost of performing actions. Stuff that would be particularly useful to a newer player, but which becomes less noticeable as you progress.

Please do. But I think what you meant is that game does not cater towards creating communities with unknown people.
Because I think cooperation with people you know and trust works nicely.

That too, but I hold hope that siege mechanics will prevent the necessity of having to hide your location. If you can defend your location, you don't have to worry so much about spies so long as you take precautions. I was going to mention something about how it's so easy to pretend you are someone you aren't.

I will draw similarities to EVE Online here. EVE has methods in place of dealing with infiltration, but bad things still happen to powerful groups.

I also edited my post above btw, and I'd like to draw attention to the way EVE allows players, for invested resources and money, to give their surroundings bonuses which make the region a group controls more profitable, and fun, to be around.

Actually, I walked from my wilderness guide teleport spot to a random nice place and I have met two active players who have their claims near me.
