Great thread.

It would also seem, all of the moderators are farmers... lol

Not at all by choice. But carpal tunnel encourages me to do things with less clicking. So I bake and farm.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

Nice excuse, Sevenless. Unfortunately fighting is much less clicking than farming/baking/gardening. There is no shame in being a carebear.

So... is this a good guide to follow or not?
Seems like a lot of people are pointing out things that are wrong with it or disagreeing with things.
I'd like to start farming soon but not sure how to go about it, so was just going to follow this guide but there seems to be a lot of criticism.

IMO, it is a good noob guide but does not really touch on the finer points of farming in Salem.

I think I can agree with that summation.

Also, it's not a completely finished system, so changes can be expected.

There are two methods of farming in salem. Heavy fertilizer, and multiple field approaches. For a beginner/hermit with very little claimed land or area walled in, the heavy fertilizer approach is necessary because you likely only have room for 3-6 fields. But that doesn't make it the best method in terms of output per time input, and as such I wouldn't say it's "the" way to farm. Advanced hermitages or villages can easily afford to claim and wall 50-200 fields, and at this point it's far better to just make more fields instead of fertilizing more.

Only have enough room for about 12 fields unfortunately unless there's a special overlapping method, guess I'll go with the heavy fertilizer method.

You can overlap fields by one row, quite easily. I first did it by accident, but now it is intentional.

Just don't get used to this. Since it's just one of those "annoying" or "mild convenience" issues (depending on your point of view) and not really game breaking, it's been very low on the list of priorities to fix.

Words of Warning: when it does get fixed, it may be left so that new fields plowed require the proper space, it could be that your fields that aren't spaced properly get nuked. I wouldn't put it past the devs to do the latter.
