Don't believe the hype, walked 1.5 hours into the darkness just eating toadstools - post patch. I could have gone further if I was paying attention to my inspirational drain lol.

Early on stick close to Boston and/or your Camp.

Then move out farther as you learn your way around and get some maps made for the area you are in.

When I am in boston I mostly only do things right in the claim so I can always teleport to the town center or back home.

I then do most of my exploring/foraging from my home claim and out. So I can easily find my way back to the claim and have a basic idea of how far out I am.

It would be awesome if you could compile a map of your journey (that's how the world maps on the wiki originate).
The current maps have a lot of white specs, so maybe if people who travel a lot share their maps we can slowly assemble better ones.
Just mail your tiles to imrielle. (link repetition: http://salem.comlu.com/)
Actually I should do that with mine, too, that would increase the Jamestown map by a lot.

Off topic but is this map actually working for people? It always times out for me.

Looking into that map client... I did some wandering that's for sure... Wandered through a huge marsh, came across several really large settlements, found this one area of the map that was covered in snakes, another that was nearly impassible with mountains... I had 8 savage charms in my bag when I passed out.

Could have been worse a long while back I has the extraordinary luck of finding 2 whispering snake skulls along with a load of savage charms, although I managed to stay clear of snakes or escape them.. but whilst climbing through an annoying forested mountainous area I literally fell on top of a bear.. one roar was all it took..

Knowing how to get from boston to your claim (however far) is vitally important, this then allows you to protect any really valuable finds by building a lean to, and porting back to boston to store on an alt whilst you get back to your claim or to sell straight away. The best way to achieve this is to port back very early on, before you have invested any real time into your base and walk it at least once. (once found the area you are serious about settling in).

Another thing would be to make an alt to meet you half way.. then you can leap frog your alts to ensure you are protected and can pick up any items you drop if that snake gets you.

Maps are great.. but not everyone can see them

I learned "Hiking" early on, it lets you travel faster, find more stuff and build leantos on the way.
Just build one ever so often, right-click it to make it your homestead and port to Boston to sell your loot or stash it on some other character. Port back, continue.
That way I built up 2k silver until finally finding a place to settle, no snake skulls though, but enough cash to get going right away.

I guess I'm going to have to start over somewhere else. I have the sinking suspicion I was plunked at the edge of the map away from Boston.

Well only if its worth losing your base, just how valuable is what you found?

All of them do for me, but I know some people have issues getting them to load. You might just want to give it some time, since it can take a while for tiles to appear.
