This literally causes a crash if you run a 64-bit app on 32-bit Java, so it's not the issue.

Alasiden: There may be another issue. Check your security software. What are you running and the version? Some software may prevent some Java apps from running at all. Open up Java settings (under Control Panel in Windows). In the last tab, Advanced, there's a section called "Java console". Set it to "Show console." If there's an error or it's being terminated for some reason, it should be logged there. You should then be able to copy/paste the output from there to the forums. It may not help us diagnose the issue, but it may help the devs with programming issues. While there, make sure all the security settings for Java are set to "Prompt user." If you're getting to this point, it's probably not the issue, though.

I'm not sure why you'd be getting "Unable to launch the application" if you're using Web Start. You should be getting some details with it. Make sure to copy/paste those to the forum, too.

There are a couple of utilities on the Internet you can use that will remove all traces of old versions of Java from your computer. You should uninstall any versions of Java you have currently installed (may be none) and follow the instructions. You can then reboot and reinstall the latest version of Java.

I have since restarted my computer and it got a little farther. The error says "address family not supported my protocol family"

Are you running any kind of security software that may be blocking connection?

due to this specific warning: is anyone in your house fooling around with IPv6?
this is a pretty similar error for java webstart & ipv6. If you're up to it, try explicitly creating a tunneling network adapter. If you're not, ask the one who's fooling around with IPv6 :)

note, however, that the "solution" to that problem was not the IPv6, but that the actual reason for the error is still unknown.

This was deluded, wrong and horrible conjecture. The error is not necessarily IPv6

edit 1:
(first: make sure you have a running Java installation)
Then, download the file onto your desktop or wherever (not just open it in internet explorer or such). Apparently, something like this could happen if your file is saved to a temporary location where you have no meddling rights, or if Window's lovely UAC decides your day has been good enough.

edit 2:
another possibility I dug up (likely if you try to play in a work setting)
basically, it suggests that proxy settings for java might be messing with the resolving of the server name and subsequent loading. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/proxy_setup.xml lists how to change to a direct connection (which might solve the problem). If you have a network administrator, check with him first whether direct connections are allowed

edit 3:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1318200-fatal-error-occurred-4-address-family-not-supported-by-protocol-family-connect/#entry21118807 suggests IPv6 might be a problem when you have both v4 and v6, and are using Java 7.

edit 1337: and now I'm through :) I hope any of these helps you out.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.
