So I would like to teleport my friend to my claim, but I can't find the text box on my claim to enter a homestead secret. Do I have to have a lean-to on my claim to enter a homestead secret?

It's in your Kin list. Type the password in and make sure to click "set".
When your buddy uses the wilderness guide, he/she needs to make sure to press Enter after entering the secret. The button will then change so he'll know that he can port to your claim. It does take a few tries as the game tries to use a random location, sometimes hits an object, and fails.
