... Is that really going to happen to an in-game nobody like me who didn't yet pissed off the big shots?

There are apparently several reasons why you might get unlucky like this: there may be a large and aggressive village near you that doesn't want to compete for resources in your area or worse, wants your land eventually (if you are lucky they will simply cover your claim with their town claim and kick you out of the town) or you may have just been in the sights of a bunch of vandals who destroy for the sheer joy of it.

It is more likely that you will be raided by a group who is more interested in your stuff than in destruction, in which case you will probably only lose a bit of stuff unless you are silly enough to stand and fight by yourself rather than porting out and leaving them to do their thing.

I think that if this happened to me and I survived the encounter with a completely trashed camp or if was killed in the process, I would start a new claim somewhere far away from my current claim on the theory that they know where I live and may well come back for more fun and games.

How does that "cover your claim with their town claim and kick you out of the town" thing works?

Town claims may overlap personal claims. In such case owner of the town may remove this personal claim, by paying 2s for each tile covered by this claim. Once the claim is gone he can easily destroy/ take everything.

That's also a good reason to expand your claim as much as you can afford (a little more each day) because it will cost them a pretty penny to claim over it. Of course they can afford to, but still - make it less attractive to them. Also a very good reason to go ahead and purchase your own Town bell as soon as possible, since that can NOT be over-claimed by anyone.

Back to the topic, I've lost quite a few things early on by dropping them into water by mistake and fighting beavers over water and getting knocked out and losing everything I was carrying. You quickly learn to stay away from fights over water. If I could change one thing about this, I would make it so this only happens in deep water but not shallow water, but I'm not holding my breath for any changes to the current way. I can dream though can't I?
