when nothing else works- try Safe Mode.

It really is the solution. Inhibits all at normal.

Bypassed all the BS- 'Access Denied' and 'This app is being used' etc. Alter the host File in Safe mode... and you don't need notepad in admin mode, etc..

IF you keep logging in safe mode look for msconfig under System 32... just accessing the application Is enough to bump you out of it.

All will be good after@!

it helps if you delete that text before you put anything in there, think of it like a readme until you edit it with that ip addresses you have to delete everything in there before it can start working

Yeahhhhh not really getting anywhere here, as weird as that is. Tried to do that command and it failed repeatedly. Tried the safemode suggestion, no dice. :|
Might just wait till they fix it instead of tearing my hair out trying to do a workaround. :(

let's work it out. Safe Mode failed...how?

Minimal w/o networking woudl have left host file wipe open to editing. It's via networking that it's used up.

Try again, but this time...

1. know the procedure by heart
2. unplug your Ethernet source...and disable wireless too if you must.

Any access to WWW...and host will become unavailable. period.

This is the most idiotic thing I have ever read. Booting in safemode wont make any difference and doesn't help at all in this case.

Attention: If you cannot edit your Hosts file for whatever reason, copy and paste it onto the desktop, edit it there and save, then drag it back into the correct folder and pick the option to replace the old file.

I was about to suggest the same. A friend could not change the host files in system32 (probably did not had permisions), i told him to copy on desktop and fix it.
Works like a charm.

If anyone is having problems editing the host file, I modified the custom client to work with out it.
