But I agree it's another pain in the ass for new players (still new myself) and it's already extremely hard to get people to play this game. My friends didn't even make it through the tutorial. It just pissed them off right away.

The mechanic is cool, but there needs to be a lot of improvement to keep the new players.

I always found that my friends also got annoyed or didn't understand the game and left, thats why I just decided to make some tutorials since it's easier to go online and watch than have me tell them what to do

As a new player, i can confirm this :) started yesterday, didn't even see the hypothermia icon till it was too late and my humours didn't refill... tried a new char, spend hours in tutorial trying to craft the jute clothing, but apparently the shirt and pants are not enough to stave off freezing... By reading this post i did discover the teleport-possibility, which is something :) The tutorial is missing a lot of other stuff too...

*edit: after teleporting to providence, and taking some shelter in the barn mentioned earlier, i managed to make a jute cap, and that seems to suffice, so for other starting players:

-jute pants
-jute shirt (move priestly robes to the coat slot)
-jute cap
-haybales (shoes)

Making this used the rags and patchwork skill, and needs 14 fibres (milkweed jute or woven reeds seem easiest to get) and 3 hay (or 18 of the autumn grasses)
With a little patience this can be done in tutorial, but especially the grasses are more readily available in the real world (not the real real world, but the virtual real world :) ) If i start again, i'll prolly make the pants, shirt and cap in tutorial, and the shoes after the jump

well you could start by reading the patchnotes which in my opinion you should do before even downloading a game, you stay nice and cozy inside of a house, there are several in providence that you can use to warm up in, second it takes less than 30 minutes to get enough skills and mats for basic clothes so that should be your first goal

facepalm! I can't believe this *****! It took me more than 1 hour to realize that the reason why i can't regen is because of the Hypothermia which btw is not explained anywhere at any given point! To expect your new players to know where to go what to do and how to do it in order to be able to stay warm and play the game is beyond retarded! I have no idea who came up with this brilliant idea but i can say for a fact its a very bad thing to place a random debuff with no explanation which is making survival impossible for NEW players! Do you hate ppl playing your game or what ?! >.<

Explain to me this how is it a good idea to make your players research into: how to craft clothes, get to town to warm up, gather resources, level up the proper skills read online about the in game debuffs etc before they start playing the game. You are asking us to go through guides for more than 2 h after we loged in made a new char realized something is wrong probably made another char realized that again something is off and then spend 2h plus searching for answers just to realize that we have to make yet another new char abandon the old ones in order to have chance for survival ? I have been a gamer for what amm... 20 years and this is the first time i see this type of **** and no i am not exaggerating. Try and fix this new 'update' or you will just get the rest of your new players leaving just like i will because this game is unplayable for no apparent reason.

The developers came up with this idea.

First off this new coldsnap is tied into the christmas event thats going on, it is very very rare that it gets this cold, in fact the last time it did was when the Devs first added it and mostly just wanted to test the extreams. This is not a 'nice' game. Its a brilliant, absorbing, time eating game that can claim your soul like no other - but it's not nice. There are a lot of things the tutorial dosn't tell you are you will be expected to learn either through trial and error, asking older players, or from the wiki (which is built by players going through going through the two previous learning options). If the tutorial held your hand and taught you everything you needed to know then you would be stuck in that place for a LONG time, likely getting very very bored and frustraited that the game was not treating you like an adult who can think and reason for themselves - most of the mechanics just rely on common sense.

Dieing early on is actually a GOOD thing. It teaches you just how harsh the world is and sets you up with the problem of working out how to avoid the death on the next character. This is not a game that you can really play on your own - even if you are the most isolated hermit in the world you are still miles better to make trade connections with other players as well as simply chatting and getting tips (and sometimes even high purity seeds, tools and other such useful stuff) from the more established players. Admittandly that is tricky to do in the game at the moment with the snow but you can chat with people here on the forums as well as trade 'Homestead secrets' to chat in game.

Yes losing a character is frustraiting, but that time was not wasted, you surely learned something from that other character while they lived. Be it what skills are best to get first, where to find certian foods and what to avoid. Take a breath. This is just a game. Your characters are just tools and so long as you learn something from each life/death then they were not wasted. Learn, grow and keep learning. Think outside the box from time to time. If this all sounds like too much work then might I suggest games like 'Stardew vally' 'Rune Factory' or maybe even 'Darkest dungeon' if it was the risk and dangers that drew you to the game.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I tried giving free 50-thermal hide suits to newbies over a couple of weeks. I had 5 or 6 takers and all but one were trolls (or the same troll).

You can also make http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Maple_Mustache_Masque to squeeze in a little more thermal.
