That is only dealing in absolutes with the 14.5% being your average loss over a long period of time. However with the 50% possibly occurring more or less in those occasions you have a greater amount of loss that may occur. the equation I was thinking of was supposed to account for that. Which I was saying you keep 74.5% of all the boards used your could end in being oiled on any given occasion but then again you could also come up with the opposite which would be the 54.5% only becoming oiled. Flipping a coin over and over again 1000s of times will result in 50% but flipping a coin 3 times could yield all tails or all heads. Calculating the probability of two different chances results in swinging percentages that may very greatly. There are dependent odds that have to be calculated. One how many of the 90% will you actually get two how many of the 90% roll did you get on the 50% and again of the total of those amounts how many did you get of those. Stacking dependent variables without finding the P value and T value would result in absolutes. getting the bell curve on average times you go planning and oiling boards is what would be required to provide accurate information about the single time you use the set. So yes the set at X points may yield a 90% average on planning boards but when throwing oiling them into the mix the perceptive usefulness of the set may vary from user to user with the same hammer & nail.

I am actually defending the fact that even not having a 90% chance does not mitigate the loss received from failing to oil a board and rerolling that 90%.

That is quite true, as I said, getting only a 90% chance on average with a 500 woodworking set, and therefore only a bit more than 80% on oiling boards is quite low for such a set I'd say.

And my math is correct. :p
Average or absolute, it evens out over a large enough sample.

Oh, sorry, wasn't talking about you if it seemed as if I was. I should have also quoted the guy before JC.. the one with "100%".

Well it seems you are about right even over a bit of extended time. However I think my other percentages on the low end are right in the way of the extreme tail-end of the bell curve 45% success could be the bare minimum.

I have a 700 set orso and it gives a pretty darn high succes rate, in the long term it is ofcourse worthwhile to get a good set but sets with 300+ already give you a steady rate. Gold leaf pins are pretty cheap and available tho.
