We added the space around houses and braziers and the like. Trees were actually done by the previous devs and John decided he preferred it stay that way because none of us ever liked the ugly tree walls and because despite that they now chop faster than most walls break, they still don't splash so removing the space would probably result in tree walls cropping up everywhere again.

i don't mind the space between tree vs tree... but not being able to place a tree (say) next to an oven or smoker is quite annoying.

Structures require a space between them so people can't make structure walls. If trees did not require the space, suddenly structure/tree walls. Now, we can log in and nuke stuff like that, but we don't want to have to do that. And what about the people who don't spend a lot of time on the forums and don't know it will be nuked or who are trying to raid and don't know it should be nuked? While we do consider that people have only themselves to blame if they don't check out the forums for patch notes and stuff, this is something that we'd rather not have happening out of ignorance and would rather not have to babysit. You can still place your trees very near your smokers and such, just plan for it to be one square away.

There is always the option of making things realistic and having the trees be stunted and dieing off if they are too close to other trees and/or structures get damaged and suffer decay (even on claim) as the leaves/needles and roots all play their part to ruin the structure.
Do not argue with idiots, for they will pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

but trees are so easy to chop down now...

but for the sake of argument... lets say some one uses 2 brick houses.. 9 spaces wide you could fit 5 trees.... but chopping down 5 trees is still faster then bashing down even a stone wall... so why even use trees for that?

Trees don't splash. Think about what you can do with that.
