Although one can always pave.

Pavement is worse than digging dirt to reveal location.

Certain structures still need paving regardless how much you want to avoid it.

True- which is why I recommend a huge mini map away from water before building it... too easy for folks in canoe's to see pavement speeding along water ways... it's the avid hiker that gets folks (and there aren't that many)... not the lazy waterway looker (typical).

Just occured to me that even if you aren't close to a river you aren't safe from people riding crickets novadays.

It was once said, "A fear of reverence: fear to omit, or neglect, or delay to do what God would have you to do, in these evil and dangerous times: when you have God's work, and God's warrant. Now fear the Lord, and none but Him: be not afraid of men, be not afraid of events, but sanctify the Lord Himself and let Him be your dread and fear."

Hogwash. The plane in which we inhabit is all which is available to you. Realize that you are within it and it is within you. You are the same nothings and somethings that are all around you. There is a path there to see and to follow and when followed will give little resistance to where it needs to be. It will all be there and not there at the same time and never within your reach.

So deep

Anyway, If you build your camp to seem very noobish, place all your things in the mine, have some fields and 2-3 boxes outside, get some walls, will raiders still bother to steal from you?

It is a pretty good place for a hermit settlement but you will have to invest in a lot of defenses if you want to remain safe, honestly a brazier wall behind brick wall will keep almost everyone outside.
Maybe even for months without playing.
Also remember it's never bad to have a few extra bases in case you get raided you have somewhere to keep your stuff safe, in the case you prosper and decide you are ready for the wishpoosh fur furs argopelters etc. You will problably want to make a church base very deep in the darkness :D or become a witch, why not?

I know alts were crapped and supposedly voided, but I still maintain a handful of them. It's where I store the essentials: gear, mystery tools, artifacts, etc... Don't leave the stuff that matters most in box/chest/shed, etc... put it on an alt... regardless of location... and never log out near lean too...

It's far too easy to claim someone else's spot... log out far away from it... so your alt will still exist no matter what. Your alt and all the stuff you saved on it!

That looks like a fairly nice site, especially around the bottom. But even though the biomes there look pretty good and the lime access is excellent, you want to be near water. The convenience of having it nearby far outweighs the small increase in chance that you will be found. Do try to build on the flattest place you can, and make sure your walls will encompass a mine entrance.

I also suggest scouting around that area as far as you can in every direction. At least 10 minutes. The advice about getting a mapping tool is good, makes the scouting easier. Make sure there are no major settlements or towns on your doorstep. Of course, I lived within about 15 minutes of a major town for months and no one ever found me. It's surprising how people won't scout their areas.

And you also want to be a couple hours from darkness. Everyone will recommend you settle just inside it or very near it, but that is actually the most populated area in Salem. People think it's good because "Oh, it's far from town and darkness is scary so no one will look for me here". Everyone is there, except the people who settled within minutes of their 'landing' spot. Those people are close to town. You want to be somewhere in between.
