I assume that he is a fresh new witch who simply didn't prepare a leanto in the darkness beforehand and now has to walk there on foot. Maybe has no silver to take the wagon. Maybe... crap, it doesn't make any sense

More then likely yes. From what I can tell he is trying to make juice on a nonwitch character.

Let me recap it for you

You are a witch, so you know that witchy things are not gonna be passed around easily, right? They tried to give you hint, use your witch, try to interact with the beetle, and it's very easy. That's as far as they will point you ^^
In the end, I still think it's a bit too soon to be a witch if you do not know what to do next and have no viable relationship to get your answers from.
