Although, from what I'm given to understand this is a really, really large amount of HP, so yes, assuming you can with a 5 stat alt, it would take you forever.

I'm not trying to make a case against Metal Chests, I'm honestly just trying to figure out if they are worth building/lugging back several hours home.

There are situations where I can see it being useful, especially after next patch, but for most people its probably not worth the cost.

It's worth building them just because they are cool.

Well, when I find locked metal chests I generally carry them off claim and put a p claim over them to break. If I don't want to break them all I will at least throw them in water so the person can't get the stuff back. So I don't consider it an effective way to protect your stuff.

Doesn't matter if you claim them, it will take a huge amount of time to destroy them anyway.

It's a worthwhile difference. Numerous chests have been broken this way, and it has overall been worth the time I've taken. And destroyed or gone into the water, the effect is the same- the stuff will never be going back to the person who put it in the chest.

When did they change it so they are liftable? The WHOLE point of metal chests was that if they have stuff in you can't lift them. I had been considering building some as they are cheaper that wooden chest for me, I hate making boards but I have stacks of metal. But you are telling me they have been shrunk and their special ability is removed.

They were made liftable when full at the same time they were made to be extremely slow to destroy (I forget how many months ago, but a few). Taking a very long time to destroy is their new special ability.

While sometimes you can get your stuff back, I have, the main point is just slowing down raiders, while they smash/dunk your chest and if they dunk the chest they don't get the goods, It doesn't really matter if you get them back. And if you have a cliff in your base you can really annoy raiders.
