Experienced Players, whats the best defense for your claim?

Postby Chillingbear » Wed Mar 27, 2013 4:52 pm

So I am currently getting to a point where I have realized that my current claim area will not sustain me. I have found a nice spot and I am clearing it out a large amount of land preparing to start building a new claim area that is much bigger and much better protected. However I am not very experienced when it comes to making good defenses so I have come here seeking advice on how to go around making the best possible defense for my area, time is not really a huge factor as I am willing to put a great deal of time into this piece of land to make sure I get it right.

So I have prepared questions to help get an idea of to make my claim best fortified against raiders.

1. How far apart should my walls be from each to prevent splash damage? or should I not worry about splash damage?
2. If I have distance between my walls what should i fill it with(nothing, Braziers, trees, ect..)?
3. How many walls thick should I have for my outer shell? How many for my inside sections?
4. How many Braziers should I have and how far spaced out should I have them?
5. When you are looking to raid places what are the things that would make you afraid to raid a place?
6. Any tips on anything else that would help me think about my strategy?
Glazed eyes of my enemies, does being fiercely gourded hurt?

1. 6 tiles inbetween (weaker walls technically should not be splashing higher walls but there is a bug with some)
2. Braziers, tree wall, walking path to refuel braziers, higher tier walls
3. Have branch/split something less resource intensive for your entire tclaim perimeter, its less about how thick of a wall and more about making walled in grids of your entire town each with braziers
4. Braziers are the ONLY thing that deter raiders and make a siege difficult
5. Lots of braziers and lots of walls *plank* (and ACTIVITY) being trapped by defenders repairing walls while taking brazier fire
6. Get a town bell down and a wall perimeter, it will deter almost EVERYONE except large factions that see you as a threat

Skeletons, they deter players, and act as a barrier.
If you're a real BAD ass like me, collecting them should be no problem at all.

Just build as many braziers as you can behind a few walls. What you really want, is somebody to hit your wall and get shot by 30 braziers from anywhere on your claim.

Piggybacking the thread instead of making a new one - what can a rookie player do for protection from raiders?
With humours <20 fighting back is definitely not an option, and I can only make split-rail fences so far. So, should I bother replacing my stick fences with split-rail? Or is prayer the only solution until I can make braziers and thick walls?

Unfortunately nothing will protect you from a ***** that just wants to mess with you.

For the rest of the raiders it's all about making your settlement appear to be not worth the hassle and risk.

First and foremost, STAKE A CLAIM! Without a claim you are a sitting duck, and all of your things (even your leanto) will decay and vanish. As long as you have an active claim that will keep most casual passers by from looting your settlement. Remember, if someone so much as trespasses on your property they leave a summon-able scent. A non-raider wandering through the lumberwood isn't going to bother.

Second, put up the strongest fence you can. If you can make split-rail then do so.

Finally, try not to look wealthy. Most raiders won't waste their time if you look like you don't have much. Avoid cupboards and sheds outside, those are big give-aways that you have lots of silver and high-tier resources. One nice tip is to put your fancy stuff in a mine on your property. Things like oiling troughs, presses and turkey coops can go underground where they won't be tantalizing to raiders. Other things to avoid keeping out in the open are: lots of drying frames with dried hide on them, finished leather sitting in tubs, unharvested crops, mass amounts of compost bins, finished coal clamps and any sort of timber pile.

Now keep in mind I only take about half of my own advice here :D

If you have a mine, you should at least have a stone hedge fence. This is usually one of those big flags saying "I have hidden stuff," too.

Agreed. I completed my stone hedge prior to planting the mine entrance, then quickly followed with brazers as soon as I had enough iron made.

Best thing a noob can do is buy the Founding Father's pack from the cash shop and drop that vclaim. Nobody is going to waste claim you to break your stick fences and rob your baskets.
