Does a Blazing Brazier need "line of sight"?

Postby Tycho » Tue Mar 26, 2013 5:11 pm

I'm currently building a new base for myself. I've decided on a two wall set up, with an inner wall of stone, with a weaker outer wall and a 2 square space between them (to minimize the effect of splash damage (as far as I've been able to understand it).

I'm planning on placing Blazing Braziers in the corridor between the two walls, along the outside of the stone wall.

I've not seen Braziers in action and the Wiki provides no real info on how the damage is dealt out, and I'm hoping some of you might enlighten me.

Does a Brazier need "line of sight"? Or does the Brazier ignore obstructions such as walls and buildings and "shoots" through them?

if your outer wall is weaker, you won't need the space between the walls (walls only splash on walls equally weak or weaker: a splitrail won't splash on a stone hedge, but a stone hedge or plank fence will).
Also, if you *would* want to escape, you'd need more than 2 spaces. I believe the spacing required is about 5-6 spaces (but have no experience building serious defences - brazier wall all the way)
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Better to put the baziers behind the stone wall.
Yes they shoot through from what I understand.

And like Kandarim says; splash only works from heavy wall to lighter wall.
You can put them together. (weaker wall outside, stone wall, baziers)

You guys pay too much attention to what's said and don't test yourself. This is beta, just because the devs say something is so doesn't make it so. Split-rail splashes stone hedge and makeshift splashes split-rail. Not sure if plank is working as intended or not.

Is this a troll? Because I have thoroughly tested my own defenses as well as the defenses of other people and they DO NOT splash to higher walls. Your comment seems to imply that you actually test things but judging by what you posit here... you don't.

this may have been the case after the first wall update that introduced splash, but since then there have been correcting updates.

Before you go pointing fingers you might want to test what you just said.

Thanks for your advice, it's been very helpful.

How far can I space them out? The wiki seems to suggest 11, anything more than that and they'll overlap, but I don't see why that should be a problem, since it would let the braziers cover more area inside and outside my walls.

you should put as many of them as you can <reasonably> afford. Overlapping will reduce their effectiveness, but if i'm not wrong, one extra brazier always increases the damage output (although the more braziers you have, the less an additional brazier will add).

You can view it like this: the damage from N braziers is basedmg * N/(1 + 0.2 N) is seen here.

I think the maximum stacking braziers is 15, but I could be wrong there (I never did keep up with all their update notes. I just spam my base with a brazier wall :) )

The rule is braziers will stack to a value of 15 single braziers, so 15 * brazier dmg is the limit that the curve approaches, assuming the dev statement is correct and I read it right. (Gotta get out that freshman calc to figure that one out.)

freshman calc says that the function converges to 5*brazier dmg :)
So i'm guessing it's limited to 15 braziers attacking a target at the same time, for a total 3.75 times the brazier damage. Personally, I'm well above that, but that simply means that simply destroying 10-20 braziers won't lower the received damage one bit: as soon as one brazier is destroyed, another takes over. And with their permanent damage nowadays, that is probably gonna hurt for prolonged raiding parties.
