Is a pickaxe necessary to mine ? ( Updated )

According to every wiki I have checked thus far a pickaxe ''increases the speed at which you mine and reduces phlegm'' . I take it you can mine with a normal axe as well ?

Thanks . So the bare necessities to start a mining operation would be a pickaxe plus some iron for the ore smelter ?

Yes, you would just need to buy a pickaxe and iron + nails to build a smelter, plus one extra nail for a sawbuck to make boards.

So... starting on new world one will need to buy 15+ bars from NPC (trip hammer, tongs, anvil etc) just to able to make wrought ot make pickaxe? Am I missing something?

Sounds about right. Wonder how much silver will be sold just so factions can get mining up and running almost immediately.

Considering there is people selling iron for like 25s, It's not THAT hard to get into mining nowadays, but it is harder than it used to be and that kind of sucks.
