iron bars and dowsing rods

so i find a mine with 24% purity i think somthing like 60 mercury so i go and smelt all the ore with nothing added in the smelter in hopes to get a 24% purity iron bar to make a better dowsing rod. but when i get the bar its only 3% purity. can you please explain how i make this into a better bar

You smelt cooper before the iron? If you did, just make a few runs of smelters and then you will be able to fill it with only ore and get a 24% iron bar with luck.

I like to think of it like having to flush out the system when smelting between different ores of differing alchemies. The smelters keep track of any partial bars remaining after a smelting run, and so the next smelting run mixes these in when calculating how many complete bars to make. After a few runs of pure ore, you will see your iron bars coming out with the desired elements.

also u have a small chance to get a dif bars, i smelted copper then switched to iron and got 1 copper bar and 1 iron bar. copper bar was actually alot better then the others too lol

Just do a couple more smelting runs. As the others have already said, your smelter is full of impacted fecal matter like John Wayne's colon. You gotta give it a cleanse if you want it to take a nice healthy dump.
