As long as there is room, items will keep showing up at random. Even a stump you use as your own storage will spawn items if there is space.

So, example, you know some stumps which you pass alot; check them every 2 days or so ( given you passed them a few times ) they should/can contain items.

Checking the stumps resets it and you have to pass them and wait a while again.

Stumps near settlements, if they are not checked, can have a lot of items in.

Are you sure about that? I see the opposite. Stumps near settlements are always empty, even abandoned ones. The deeper I get into untouched wilderness, the more items I find non stop.

Someone once mentioned making a stump farm. How is this made exactly?

Stumps need player presence to spawn items. Stumps on player or village claims do not spawn new items. The best course of action is to get some distance between you and a patch of forest and then just defoliage the hell out of it. In time the stumps from the felled trees will become hollow. If they are a minimap or 2 away from your camp they'll start spawning items but only every time the area is reloaded (when you or another player enters).
That's what I've gathered from personal experience, at least.

I have the opposite experience as well, it seems more like Haven's system...when a map zone is empty of players and then loaded the spawns happen.

So the more dead an area is the more items I find.

All the stumps and bushes near, but not on, my claim take a week or more to spawn items, but the ones where nobody travels refill quickly.

Either I've been insanely lucky to the point I see a different system, or the information in this thread is incorrect.

To make a stump farm:

Cut down a bunch of trees. Leave the stumps. Over time these decay into Old Stumps and you can then find items in them like those that were originally on the map.
