no, emptying it on unclaimed land isn't a criminal offence.

But technically you stole the chest. So why it's not a crime?

It counts as vandalism, and it does leave a scent, just no evidence to summon with. So you can still track the person's claim or even the thief, provided you have enough tracking charges to get to their place.

Its how the game works. Once you take an object from claimed land you are 'stealing' that object but once it is on unclaimed land the box and all contents are FFA; meaning you can take stuff from it or even destroy it crime-free. There will be only one scent left at the edge of the claim which would point to the object that you stole, i.e. a chest but not anything that may have been inside.

Not sure what you're referring to but vandalism (destruction on claimed land) does leave scents that contain summon-able evidence of waste.

But walking off the claim with the chest will leave a larceny scent you can be summon killed with.

I don't recall exact times on everything, so I'll give you rough estimates from what I can recall.

Waste and Larceny tend to last 3-6 days. During this time, people can collect evidence from the scene and use it to track the perpetrator or his/her claim down. Evidence, the item you collect when tracking a crime, lasts 10x longer. You won't really be out of danger for a couple of months.

Crime isn't something you should be doing lightly unless you're using throwaway characters.

edit: steaking, no this isn't buffy, I truly meant 'stealing'

Aww, I got excited for a moment. Thought there was a skill that'd let me butcher a dead player into steaks. :D
