The answer is a firm "maybe". The reason I brought this up in the first place is that the highest purity water I've been able to find was 7% lead, and I found it on the edge of a lake. Taking directional samples from several spots I determined the center of the node to be in the middle of the lake.

Here's the funny thing: out of the three lakes I've surveyed all three had purity nodes centered in the deep water of the lake. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but it would make sense.

On a (very) related note: I decided to have my main build a row boat and carry it to my alt about 15 mini-map screens away. I thought this would be faster than grinding my alt to Seamanship. I was wrong. Damn cliffs...

Also, I've heard that canoes take leather to repair. It's hard for me to get leather, hence the rowboat. Canoes can be smuggled through Boston if your careful, probably the best tool for a water surveyor.
