just forgive the noob question, but how do you technically transfer goods between your say "grassland" alt and your "forest" main char via the server town ?

I mean, do you need them to be on different accounts and log in at the same time ? And how do you transfer goods between inventories ?

Yes, you need two different accounts to be able to log in two of your characters using two clients ofc and have them trade in boston or whereever you prefer.

You can do it with one account but i don't recommend it. Salem is all about alts :p
