Offensive defense?

Postby pistolshrimp » Sun Mar 31, 2013 10:59 pm

Okay, that's an awkward title I know. There doesn't seem to be a post dedicated to offensive strategies for defending your claim while being raided (or maybe I'm using the wrong search terms?) There does seem to be a bunch of threads on good defense for your claim, so what I have here is offensive strategies cobbled together from those threads. Here's what I've got so far:

1) Braziers, build lots of them.
colesie wrote:You need more brazier coverage, 2 braziers then a 1 tile gap followed by another 2 braziers is good. Another alternative is to make a brazier every 2 tiles so,
b s b s b s

b= brazier
s= open space

Making a full line of braziers is not encouraged because it means that for them to get in, one of your braziers will have to be completely destroyed which is a loss to you.

2) Destroying the trial by fire.

3) Plain ol' going up to the raiders and pvping them. Risky me thinks.

4) Using alts to repair walls they've destroyed trapping them in to be picked apart by brazier fire.

4.5)
Being active online (especially with many people) gives the threat that there will be plenty of alts just waiting to repair walls and trap them in. Good deterrent to being raided in the first place.

5) Because skeltons are immovable for the first 30 mins you can log on alts and kamikaze a raider into a corner. Again the point is to trap the raider. (From viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5546)

What did I miss, is there anyone who can elaborate on any of those options from the point of a defender? From the point of a raider?

I have a couple of ideas myself that I'd like to put forward and maybe get some constructive criticism or here from someone who has already thought of them and tried them out.

6) The Alt Trap
The idea here would to be to create a "weak spot" for the raiders to "exploit". The gist would be to create a strong wall with a single space gap in it. Then log off an alt in this exact spot. After a raider passes through the opening, thinking they had found an easy way in you log your alt on and have him be killed in that opening, creating a skeleton that would effectively trap the raider inside.

Here's one possibility of how one could pull it off.
WWWAWWW
TTTT TTTT

A= alt
W= wall
T= tree

Additional notes
It might make sense to put a signpost in the A space to make it look like you are trying to seal up the weak spot, but just didn't have time to finish it.

It might be good to equip your alt with a slingshot or musket to be able stay in the gap and to attack the raider at the same time.

I guess I might as well add, the alt trap idea only works if your are online during the raid, they become counter productive if you're not. So they are probably better for towns than small p-claims.

Variations on a theme
6.5) The Honey Pot aka raider fishing
Same concept, trap the raider, but instead using a lore to get the raider where you want them. My suggestion is chests. Here's what it could look like.

WWAWW
W W
WC C CW
WWWWW

A = alt
W= wall
C= chest

As soon as they pass through to check the chests you log on your alt, trapping the raider. I also suggest filling your chests with humus as something of an F-U, but completely optional of course.
6.x Alt Wall

This one is overkill, but thought I ought to carry things out to their logical extremes. The idea is:

AAAAAA
A A
A A
AAAAAA

Where you guessed it, A=alt.

7. Animals
I read some thread about someone aggroing a bear into Boston, in theory you could aggro a bear or snake towards the raiders.

I'd imagine a slightly better idea would be to aggro a bear or a bunch of snakes in between your walls. I have no idea if that would work of course, can animals trespass? Would they stay trapped or randomly disappear after a while? Would a snake bite compound with the drain from trespassing? I can't really imagine anything more badass than having a wall of bears, other than maybe riding one...

Nice collection of things from around the forum! I don't have anything to add myself, but consider this a bump for something that could be a good discussion. ;)

Animals do despawn. Even staying logged in won't help as they disperse on server restart. There's a thread somewhere where we discussed this. A wall of bears would be pimp though ;p

The one of them uses his BB drain and they all start slaughtering eachother.
