I'd suggest that you read through this guide, it was very helpful when I first started:

It sounds like you had some bad luck with your first outing, and I'd suggest trying to find a more remote location so that you can get setup. After you are setup with a base, it will open up some time for you to craft. After you craft a bit, you'll understand game mechanics more, and your enjoyment will go up.

MOST people get to a point where they have to go out and look for PVP, sometimes you're just unlucky in that regard.
