Attacking Animals, Can't Agro

Yeah slingshot is one option.

I haven't had any problem running up to them and agro'ing with stomp. As you mentioned, it agro's at the beginning, not when you hit. You just have to be in-range.

I can not confirm the requirements to make the slingshot. I can tell you it takes 5(!) plant fiber and two sharpened sticks. It can shoots "Any Stone" I think. I have confirmed that it shoots Stone, Granite and Flint. Have not tried Lime.

The best procedure to shoot is as follows:

1. Click on Combat->Attacks->Shoot
2. Click on target

Make sure the target is standing still. The shot takes some time (a little longer than a punch). Shots miss often, so have plenty of ammo on you. I seem to miss big game much more than small game. One deer took 14 shots to hit! May have been the hilly terrain effect.

Or you set shoot to a hotkey and aim in the direction of the target as you press the hotkey.
