Biome Alteration

I was just wondering if it is possible to alter the biome you are in, for instance by planting a bunch of trees in a badlands or plains biome would it eventually become a forest biome and start spawning chestnuts, etc.?

If the ground is untouched planting trees will not change the biome.

However I have read somewhere that if you dig/muddy the ground and then plant the biome will change after a tree plant.

yea who needs "secure" trading, its not like this game would benefit from it, lets just kill the newbs instead as long as that's fun and people still join the game.

How would you muddy the ground?
