Yeah, that's right, I got myself one of these bad boys... except...err... so... what do?

http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Snakeskin_Coat
Yeahno... also searched "artificer slots" and nothing.

What does it do, what do all the descriptions and stats mean in its mousover, what are the artificer slots for etc?

Okay, as I understand it...

Artifacts add buffs to your character, from attack and defense buffs, to digging and tree felling stuff.
The buff is described on the artifact.
The clothing has a certain amount of slots.
The proficiencies that the artifact has affects the chance of you placing it successfully.

ie..
on a cloak and dagger/wilderness artifact, if your stats in those proficiencies are high you will have a better chance of placing it..
the numbers are the chances.. higher applicable proficiencies.. you will be towards the easier end.. lower applicable proficiencies, towards the higher end.
The easiest it could be is the lowest number, and the hardest it could be is the higher number.

Take the artifact on your mouse and right click clothing.
A tool tip will tell you your odds.
You have a chance to change your mind.
If you click then the attempt is made.
You either do it.... or not...
You end up with either a piece of clothing with a buff...or a piece of clothing with a ripped slot.
If you fail you lose the artifact.

(I think thats correct, but I have been wrong before so maybe someone else can correct any mistakes.)
Is terminally confused and her head hurts

This topic covers some of the artifice slotting. Artifice for dummies
iambobthepirate explains it very well (Something I could not do).

Your proficiencies only matter if clothing AND artifact have the profs.
The higher the number, the less likely you suceed. The closer the two numbers, the more predictable the odds.

Force Buttons into them (proficiencies don't match but your carpenter with high H&N and 60+ C&D (murder pre-requisite) should have 40%+ chance.

Once that's in without a broken slot, you can easily fit Etterfang and Colored Flagstraps. (C&D matching proficiency)

Snakeskin Coats are easy to make, just explore old stumps for dried hides.

If I were you I would look into getting a Plymouth Frock for a PvP set that isn't too bad if you lose.

Admirals ends up being the endgame and fairly easy to slot.

Fantastic, that certainly did the trick, thanks. Now to try it out to get an understanding of how the buffs work.

thankfully my village has a tailor that is really knowledgeable about this stuff and passed me some wisdom. What you want to ask yourself is do you want your set to be and then decide how those items will help that set. Remember anything that gives defense from Blunt, Piercing, Concussive are only going to help against other players, were as Feral defense is for animals. on the offensive side it is a little different and you have to think about what attacks you use. If you use Thrust, Piercing is what your looking. If you use Punch/uppercut, its blunt, and slam is concussive. Also a great thing to add is Indian arrowheads because they give a general +5. The above are good for an offensive set you can make a good one with Arrowheads, Cobwebs, and buckskin inlays. A set using that combo will not only be good PvP defense/offense but be good at hunting and if you throw a few Feathered Brooches in there its an engineering set.

I don't know if this is new, because I have never tried slotting an artifice before, but when I did I got a little pop-up button telling me the chance of success when slotting an artifice in a wool sweater. I assume clicking it would slot the artifice. I chose not to.
