I see them in grasslands quite frequently. In isometric, they look kind of like big, green, leafy rocks.

I suspect then that I have not come accross any grasslands.

Aren't grasslands all around the main town in every server? It's that way in Boston. Just wander around the main town claim and you'll find some myrtle oak bushes.

I started out in what I think is called "Savanna", which is like grassland but without many useful forageables (no milkweed, blackberries, blewits, or devil's wort), but has TONS of Myrtle Oaks as far as the eye can see. There is no brown terrain anywhere, just 4 different kinds of green splotches. Myrtle Oaks, Oak trees, and Oakworth all abound here, and the only good early food was berries on a straw.

I added myrtle oaks as green dots on my radar to use as helpful navigation landmarks.

As for prospecting, from my experience, for your first iron, I would recommend either a Woo-Woo Wand or a low-purity Dowsing rod. The higher the purity of your prospecting tool, the more limited the selection of mining sights it detects but they will be of better quality. However, given that in the beginning, QUANTITY of iron and ease of access is what matters above all else, you should aim for low purity.

By a stroke of luck, when I first went prospecting, I found a mine almost in my back yard just 60 tiles from my claim-stone. In further fortune, it's ore was 13% purity (10/10/40/40). Using my woo-woo wand I was able to find 4 other mine nodes in my area, but none of these registered when using the 13% Dowsing Rod.

Ahh good to know thank you. I didn't know the purity of drowsing rods limits what I can find as I myself have a %12

How do you do that?

If you are using Ender's client, then in the "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Salem" folder, there is a file called "Radar.xml". You will see many lines it structured similarly to that one. Paste the line in, and then save the file. Now you have extra dots on your radar.

The section you put it in determines the shape on the minimap. I put most of my changes at the bottom where the indian feather is so that they will be square.

Port to Boston, look around the outskirts there. You'll find one.
