Fortune's tips on hunting

Postby Fortune » Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:09 am

I have received many helps from this section, I thank you all who helped me.
I feel like contibuting to the society as well.
I want to give some tips on how to hunt animals, because I have recently been able to hunt bears, the strongest animal in this game other than other players (though one may argue that newbies are weaker than snakes :P but dont worry, this tip book will help newbies hunt and eat to become stronger animals) Also, I may have mistakes or lack something in this post, feel free to point out.

1. Rabbit
The easiast animal in Salem. You need to learn "self-defence" to have that "punch" attack at least.
I killed my first rabbit at YB10 B10, because I like to be safe.
The steps are:
Approach rabbit
Punch it
Run away and wait for the rabbit to come for you, wait for the moment when the rabbit is at straight path to you, this is when it is surely to attack you, when it approaches you, punch again. Then repeat run, wait, punch.
It is essential that you make sure the rabbit is coming for you to attack you instead of just jumping around. If it just jump around and you punch, then you will have that short moment of stiffness and the rabbit will attack you and you will not be able to attack back.
If you are unsure that you can hit the rabbit when it attacks you, then do not hit, because it might just run away from your hit and hit you again when you are stiff(then you get hit two times without hitting back)
This stiffness thing is consistent in hunting all animals in salem.

2.Wartbite
Also did this at YB10 B10
Can kill with punch
Same method as rabbit, initiate fight, run away, wait, hit, then repeat.
Becareful you are no reeling too much, reeling is that square thing that shows on the top left of your screen when you get hit. If you reel too much, cricket will hit you with big damage. So, after each fight, wait for your reel to decrease.

You probably want to get sabre and fencing for snakes, beavers, deers, bears.

3.Snakes
I did never punch snakes. Only waited until I had fencing and 20YB
With "Thrust" and 20YB you can one-hit-kill this thing, this is important because if it bites you even only one time, you will be poisoned and be dead eventually unless you drink the potion which costs 250silver for 10 uses. For NOOBS, who probably will not buy this potion, do not fight snakes until 20YB and thrust so you can One-Hit it.
When you have ur sabre and 20YB, just walk to it, when you are around 0.5 cm away from it, (it usually will not initiate attack to you so soon) use ur thrust and it will die.
In case, snakes attack you first, YOU SHOULD WALK AWAY FAST and then at a safe distance, wait for the snake to crawl to you, when at around 0.5cm, thrust it, and it will die if you have 20YB without bite you.
Snakes are good for their etterfang and rainbow scales, good artifice.
Also, when you lift old logs, snakes might spawn at random, becareful.

4.Beavers
Not so sure what YB you need. 20YB and 20B should be good with thrust and sabre.
When fighting beavers, walk to them, thrust, and you have to FOLLOW THEM, DO NOT WALK AWAY. Follow them but not too close, have like 1cm. If you do not follow, they will use their BEAVER DANCE to get you, they will start spinning and you will lose many HP. So just dont walk too far. If you ever do initiate this beaver dance, then just walk far away until their dance stops. After you follow them, they will often turn around or to side, you keep following until they stop at somewhere they can no longer continue walking (such as your body, or cliff, or deep water) then you thrust at them again. They will probably turn to you and hit you when you hit them, but with 20B you should be able to stand this damage. Just do not waste your attacks and only attack when certain.

5.Deers
25YB I suppose, not so sure.
Similar as beavers, thrust, follow, it is important to follow because deers can charge at you if you are further away, charge deal 10 damage while normal hit only 4 damage. Follow and wait for deer to either stuck or run into you, when it runs into you, you can attack it and you will not miss. So follow it.

6.Bears
I use the get the deer to kill your bear old trick to do this.
Find a bear, find a deer or 2 deer, attack the deer, then walk to the bear (or use run or wander) and let the deer fight the bear by walking around the bear and wait for them to fight each other. the deer usually loses but it will deal 20 or so damager to the bear, you can choose to kill the bear yourself or use another deer.
The drawbacks in this methods are:
The bear attack you first, you have to just keep following the bear but avoids its hits until ur deer finally fight the bear. You probably need high BB like 50 for this since bear will FEAR you which drain your BB.
if you choose to fight bear on your own then you need 50 stats. Use your hunting techniques that you learned, since if you have 50 stats, I probably have nothing to teach you. Just avoid the bears special attack the one when he stands up and roar, if this is cast at near distance to you, you lose at least 20 HP or more, I lost 31 one times. If cast at further distance like 1cm, you lose 5hp, but you get stunned for 3 second-ish. So when he stands up, RAN AWAY.
If you want to kill bear without deers, then have 70 STAT or lower but with gears full of COOL artifice, so you can kill bear in 4 hits. and just do a blood for blood attack method with it.

THE END

BTW, I feel sad if no one reply this post. Please make some reply to make me look not so bad.

pro-tip for your fighting as you never included it at all... use the two skills Gaurd and Regain Composer... (regan can be used before/during or after combat to lower reel.) gaurd drops all attacks to your front by 50% so a 10B hit ram from deers becomes 5B and so forth.

which can mean the player remains standing or takes a dirt nap. beavers can be 1 hit by thrust if you have around 30yb (i do it all the time) deer take about 30-40yb to 2 hit ko with thrust but it can be tricky as they love to run around then charge.

snakes can be pwned by 5 humor toons as long as you fight them with back allypug for stomp and battle in a cheap way via shallow water be it rivers or shoreline. you have to be a few inches from the shore so it cant hit you but stomp does AoE (area of effect) damage and can 1-3 hit a snake depending on how high your yb is and how lucky you are to land the hits.

snakes will also make great hunting dogs if you can find them in forests or badlands in around rabbits they will fight/kill the rabbits and i think turkeys which makes it super easy to get free food (provided you kill or dodge the snake(s) that are there)

when you fight deer you will want atleast 30B to ward off the 10B rams and the 4B standard hits they do (typically you hit it once and it will deal a 4B hits back before it starts to wander around) ofcourse with gaurd you will take 2B hits and 5B rams.

beavers can be tricky if there are more then 1 as it will typically dance regardless of how close or far you are if they have backup. all you can do is gaurd and run the @#$@#$ away while they dance around.

if you time it well beavers could dance in to deer and possibly fight them too lol, if you cant get behind walls you can dodge around stumps/trees/fallen old logs/shrubs ect to interupt the dance so it misses you BUT as i recall it can hit through some walls/gates if they glitch ideally you want 20yb 20b to fight beavers incase of dance. but you could fight lower if you are skilled enough and can set it up right.

while gaurd will use YB while active its an important skill to use least when hunting just got to face the thing you are fighting so it hits you head on to half its damage

Beaver dancing is easy to dodge. I fought three beavers once that all were dancing. Deer are easy to kill. Just fence them in with boulders and logs. Then stomp.

Concerning snakes and rabbits: I saw a funny sight the other day: 5 dead rabbits with a dead snake laying besides them. Nomnomnom..

A way that worked for me that I found out on accident (march hare was chasing me) if you are a little weaker than the recommended stats is to have a fence with a gate (any kind). Attack the Deer, Bear, or rabbit that becomes a march hare and run back into you fence and close the door. They cant get in to hit you but you can stomp next to the fence until they die. Easy and mostly safe. With the make shift fence you can now do this anywhere easily.

you will be poisoned and be dead eventually

Knocked-out - unless you know something I don't.

As for the crickets. Not much to add other than moving around and make sure the cricket actually follows you before attacking. I've made the mistake a few times and got hit from the side in the process.

You forgot March Hare - rabbits from hell! :o

Remember that a bear can also use stomp.
