Problem building a leanto

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I have searched but not found the answer. I obtained the hiking skill and would like to build a leanto in my new found spot but when I try I get the message that the construction site contains no building materials. I have the 2 hay and 10 wood blocks in my inventory. What am I doing wrong?

You have to put materials into building site. When you have the construction window open then either drag materials into it or move your mouse over the materials in construction window and scroll with mouse wheel

You can also store stuff in signs like that op
