How do Scents Work Exactly?

Postby Dyne » Wed Dec 12, 2012 3:46 am

Some raider has been coming to our little hamlet for a while now, the first time he came, I KOed him. Ever since then, I've died to him while logged out close to five times. I don't get how he has so many scents on me. This guy HAS to be exploiting SOMETHING. The first time I killed him, he got hit a total of three times. So that's at the most, three scents, correct? I'm stumped as to what's even happening.

By koing him you left a summonable evidence. It was as easy as waiting until you were offline, and right clicking the evidence near your homestead to summon your character into the game.

So a person can use the same scent over and over and over again? I kinda expected them to be consumed when they were used.

Once a perpetrator for any given evidence is killed, the evidence will just say 'The perpetrator is dead.' when you right click it on the ground. If he did kill you (you had to make a new character because your old one was gone) and not just KO, he couldn't have used the same evidence to kill your new character.

Unless you logged in with a missing character and had to take a trip to the docks and reincarnate, you're just being robbed while offline.

So he can use that evidence to KO my character how ever many times he wants? He just KO'ed me a seventh time after logging in this morning.

well you ko'd him once, so return the favor, goto where he ko'd you, get the scent follow it to his house and summon him if hes offline and kick his butt, repay him in kind. unfortunately its gonna be a back and forth game, some people play for that. so oyu have two choices, reroll and move on, or relocate to somewhere else far from there so he cant find you as well. Or join in on the slaughter while working up to cain and able as fast as possible(rather quick if you have iron bars and make lovers lockets) and then just kill him totally, and i mean kill not ko! that will put a stop to it! but note, he will load a new toon, get that scent, from the death, and pester you with the new toon too probably! so after killing him i would move far away so he cant find you.

BUT answer your question, evidence has a scent power, the more dramatic the crime the stronger the scent, or so im led to believe. but it does fade over time. so eventually the scent he has will be gone and i dont think he can summon youanymore after that. but im just going off tidbits ive read, not personal experience, so i would get cain and able and simply kill his butt! maybe then he will rethink pestering people!

pps.. most people advise to learn cain and able on an alt if possible, so that incase something bad happens, you dont lose your main toon, but the choice is dependant on availability of resources, and time, your kinda pressed on time, as this guy is harassing you. you can also avoid the problem completely by explaining your situation in the other forum " the one where you can hire others to avenge you" and pay someone to go get his butt then you dont have to worry about it. if your relatively new, i would go this route, pay someone 500s or 1000s get them to go kill him so it stopps! yes you ko'd him first , but for good reason, he is now simply harassing you, so if your story is true, im sure someone will help you!

Can people please stop saying died when they mean knocked out :/

minor quibbles aside, the only way to stop him summoning you is to kill him or to protect your leanto better. Remember that you can be summoned within 8-10 tiles of your leanto, so your walls have to be further out than that.

I actually have a homestead setup. So in order for me to not be summoned I have to make my walls 10+ tiles away from the token? This game's scent system is absolutely absurd.

So I need clarification on the following things:

1. By KOing a player, it leaves a scent on the ground? Like a harvestable node that he can continue to come back, pick up, and summon me online? This degrades over time? If so, how long will it be there?
2. By turning on tracking, I can search for scents, right? Does him KOing me leave a scent if he summons me online with a scent? I've been checking for scents nonstop everyday now and havent seen anything.

This whole system seems really complex and I wish it was explained somewhere in game, otherwise I would have avoided this whole fiasco and let the damn fool rummage through my chests in my homestead.

Darn. So a 17*17 (just under 300 square tiles) claim will not cut it.

*starts recounting his money* ;)
