What should I do first?

Postby Dolby3d » Tue Dec 11, 2012 6:57 pm

I've just figured out Salem isn't quite the same as heaven and hearth. In H&H I used to begin hunting small animals then farming (and create curios which i would never run out of), load up on lp and spent it on stuff like marksmanship. In Salem however all i've done so far is just walk around collecting mushrooms and berries then eat them and repeat.... kind of pointless. My guess is to go for mining first so i can get nails but it requires a heck lot of learning points which i cannot afford as a noob. Farming is 10x more difficult from what i've read on the wiki (humus/upkeep (wtf?)).

Straight to the point: what am i supposed to do? Can anyone give me some directions?

Its up to you but the easiest thing to do is just raise all your profficiencies to about 30. Start with what you can raise easily in the biome you are in, then move to another biome etc. As you are doing that you can learn bits of the game and work out what you want to do.

First steps.

When you get settling, grind some crickets for silver to buy nails for one compost bin and the starting seeds ASAP.

Work on coaling next, since it takes 3 days for clamps to burn out, and a mine without coal is useless.

Then shoot for prospecting and metallurgy, and start saving up silver for a mine entrance (8 nails) and a smelter (3 bars, 2 nails). This will also involve silver grinding. It goes a LOT faster with a sword, so if you can get fencing before you have coal ready it's well worth it to invest in buying a sword before the mining materials.

When you start to make metal, I recommend getting a 2nd smelter first, and then a pick. After that an axe, a shovel, a couple more compost bins and one baking table, and from that point 90% of the metal you make should go towards braziers.

30? It took what seemed hours to raise it to 6. What inspirationals should i learn because i noticed that the learning ability drops if i study the same stuff. Currently im aiming to get small hunt game so i can hunt rabbits or something? I have no clue what i should do after that because tanning probably requires another skill...

Also, from what i've learned from H&H its necessary to get a claim asap. For that i need silver (and im not paying irl money for something like that). I've read on the wiki however that it's possible to sell tanned hides for silver.

Can you tell me btw how much silver it costs to expand a claim with 1 tile?

Depends what profficiency it is. Some are quite tricky, others are easier. You don't need 30 in everything right away but most don't need raising above 30. With 30 in everything you can learn 95% of the skills. Some foragables are quite good, the connifer forest (dark forest) gives loads of singing logs, good for cloak and dagger, frontier and wildernes law and lore and stocks and cultivars. Cloak and dagger dosn't need to be above 19. There is no real "right" way to go about playing Salem, Potjeh's idea is reasonable. In some ways early game is fun, everything feels valuable and i find myself fighting over priorities.
