Maple Leaves, what's a guy to do?

Ok so I just started this game and it seems rather interesting so far. And right now I'm trying to make the first masque that's available from Childish Things. The problem is that I can't figure out how to gather maple leaves, and not for lack of trying mind you. I did quite a bit of wandering searching for logical areas to find a pile of leaves or something similar. I wandered into a grassy field and collected some grass, I've picked some branches, but no luck on the leaves.

Do I have to cut trees down to get them? If so I can't because I can't buy an axe to cut trees down with, because I have no silver to buy said axe. Do I need to trade with someone maybe? Kinda stuck here.

You get them from maple trees, the ones with red leaves. They only come with two leaves which take a looong time to respawn after they've been picked. Just try to get whatever non-leaf inspirationals you can to get your free wilderness teleport, leaves shouldn't be too hard to find far from Boston.
