AFAIK, JC is currently not actively advertising salem because he does not consider it 'finished' (whether he ever will, is another question), but that:
1) the current server set-up with everything around it is self-sustaining, financially
2) the population can be boosted significantly and on short-term with targeted advertising (as shown with the original launch of 1.0) whenever he does wish to do so.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

This, but not only this. The game already has more than a handful of empty settlements, abandoned buildings, leantos, etc. It would kind of ruin the element of a Permadeath Survival game if you port in from the Native guide right on top of another settler. Or worse, next to high powered player that just greets a new player with "Hi, bend over so I can use this gelatinous lard to sodomize you". Yeah I can see Steam going real well for Salem

Steam players would spawn in > Can't figure game out > "Everything isn't given to me and I have to work to find information, wahhhhh" > Negative Reviews > Game ends up exactly like it is now.

Steam wouldn't really do anything but probably give JC and MM a bad rep. Which isn't even close to what they need right now. Keep it low key, honestly it's far better this way. Maybe not monetary wise, but the environment is better IMO

Considering a lot of people have chosen to opt out of animals one way or another while hoping they do make it to providence, they might already have renamed their newbie neighbour "billy the pig" and have made him farm lards to fulfill his role of domesticated pig. You never know with Salem!
