Rotten Logs?

Okay, I've always been a little confused about this. Sometimes when I log - ha get it - in, and search logs and stumps I'll find things in what used to be empty logs, but sometimes I'll log - even funnier the second time - in and find nothing. Is there a waiting time before the world drops in more handy goodies or am I just **** outta luck?
