Yes, holding the coal and shift then clicking is a massive improvement over the method I was using. Thanks a lot. I don't know if I over looked it in the hot key area on the extended menu area, but if it isn't there, a tip should be added.

Just in case it's not obvious, note that this is true of all things where you can right click an item onto something, so putting branches/etc into fireplaces/stoves, fertilizing/preparing/planting fields, feeding turkey coops, filling compost, etc. Careful with things that take a variety of items though like compost bins and coops, it's very, very easy to accidentally put something rare and valuable in there if it's compostable/feedable if you're spamming right click.
