Locked Gates inside PC?

I am reading mixed answers here.

If I build stone walls, and a gate, and the gate is inside my territory, do I need to lock the gate?

In other words, if someone not friended to the PC, trespasses onto the territory and reaches the gate, will it open if it is not locked? Or will they need to destroy it?

If they have trespassing and your gate is unlocked, they can open it.
They will leave a trespassing scent (no evidence).
If it's locked, they'd have to tear it down.

And it's worth underlining that a waste scent is far more significant than a trespassing scent... Unless I'm mistaken, a trespassing scent is not summonable (but is trackable), but a waste scent is summonable and lasts much longer so the barrier to them going in and checking out what there is to steal is much, much higher with performing waste required.

That's weird then. Because I was raided, my gate was unlocked, but the raided destroyed the gate. ? lol
