It should be safe to add 4 more piles on the edges

+1, so it makes a 3x3 grid. I also like to put a makeshift fence around it just in case wandering humans or animals somehow contribute (since it doesn't take long at all) but that's likely just me being paranoid.

Lots of people use fields rather than paving and tend to report it working well, but I hate getting bad yields so much that I don't want to risk it :\

you may also place a pclaim over this area, as the timber piles may tend to disappear otherwise (by themselves or by larceny)

And stuff not on a claim will decay after awhile. Usually, you can build a timber pile and it will finish before it decays, but not always.

How likely is it that all of your timber piles decay? Say around 16

Very unlikely, I just did 16 piles unclaimed recently and maybe 2 or 3 of them were getting pretty dark red by the end of it (implying they were down to ~50% or lower) if a bunch of unclaimed piles disappeared suddenly it's probably much more likely that someone tore them down.
