It's not exactly the *best* way to do it, it's just a way that's possible.

(in no particular order) Good variety curios to keep stocked: Wood Choppings, Stray Chestnuts, Grass Whistle, Rock Maracas, Smooth Stone, Brain, Devil's Wort, Stringy Sinews, Rainbow Scales, The Last Elusive Bone, Spinning Top, Simple Crucifix, Seaweed Mask

Unless things have been changed around, you tend to get these fairly easily or they're cheap to make. That's 13 variety curios, and assuming no overlap that allows you to get 10.8x the inspirational value while never using the grinding curiosity at less than 70% efficiency.

Ah, spinning tops have been nerfed into the ground since I used them. That would only get you 2700 nat phylo (and that's ignoring the fact that spinners are a variety curio here). Tumbleweeds and Min surveys are probably your best bets.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

It looks like mineralogical survey is the best base item for Natural Philosophy (900 base) these days if you can make clay (the other ingredients are common foragables easily found around Boston). Interspersed with other inspirationals, you will get 900 for the first and 630 for the subsequent ones; with a spinning top, dead cricket, and a smooth stone, 4 of them gives you 3260.
