Beggining Miner Questions

Postby Iracus » Thu Dec 24, 2015 7:43 am

Hello everyone,

So I tried to do some searching of the forums but I haven't really found the information I was looking for. So if anyone could help me with the following it would be very much appreciated.

So I have my mine all set up and have started to mine, it takes all my phlegm to do so but so long as I keep eating crickets I can mine for a while. So I am trying to work on being able to stay mining longer but my main question is in mining. What is the most effective mining technique? Should I just go in each direction and mine until I hit iron or copper nodes? Should I go so many tiles deep then turn and made outer walls? Is mining efficiency similar to mine-craft?

And for selling ore/bars. Do people buy the ore? I have ore but I don't have a smelter and need more money to get the bars and nails required to make one. So any help, suggestions, or tips from anyone would be awesome. Thanks!

I'm sure other players will be able to comment better on the best mining techniques.. But if you don't have a smelter you could probably work a deal with somebody who will smelt the ore for you if they get to keep some of the bars.

i guess the first thing to watch out for is cave-ins. if you do alt-R you will see the range of the mine that is protected against them. if you want to
dig outside this range without having the mine collapsing, you need to build mine supports, or dig in one-tile lines. this latter method is also good for
finding ore veins. i can give you some iron bars and nails later so that you can build a smelter.

also: watch out for the bats and better not to mine during bloodmoon because they might KO you at your respawn point as well.

Okay I have just been going in lines. How do I tell if a cave in will happen? Is there any sound that plays before? As it says there is a visual of rubble falling but I am paranoid I am missing it.

And that would be super helpful if you could spare some, I would definitely give you a bunch of copper ore as I hit a decent vain of that. Sadly no iron yet

a cave-in makes a lot of noise (it scared the life out of me first time it happened ) and you will also see rubble dust falling on your head,
so you can't miss it.

you will find iron ore soon enough, it is more common than copper. and thanks for the offer, i can make some extra copper buttons then :p

Oh okay good, then I am safe for now. I shall be on the look out for any terrifying sounds and dust while mining. Would you be able to trade in a bit? My hearth secret is "5oExcel" if you want to add me

No kidding, very loud and terrifying especially since you have to stand right beneath it to slowly build the support for what feels like eternity.

I like to keep a box that is dedicated to always containing 2 fresh boards, 2 dry board, and 1 nail in the mine so if a cave in ever happens I can sprint over to it, take everything from the box, sprint back, and be able to build it in time.

Its better to just leave the mine and let the cave in happen, and make sure you always build 2 mine supports next to each other to avoid cave-ins completely around them.
The less mine supports you have stopping a cave in, the better it is to organize the inside of your mine and removing mine supports that stop a cave-in make it start again.
Building mine supports prior that aren't stopping a cave-in will not start a cave-in when destroyed.
