Iron for Nails

Postby Zinik » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:37 am

I've been playing a couple weeks now and am starting to hit a wall in what I can do because everything is starting to require nails and boards (which requires nails to make). The game seems to be in a catch 22 because I need leather to make the woo-woo wand to prospect for iron, but to make leather, I need nails for the tub!

Now, before everyone starts saying just buy it, I feel I shouldn't have to since all the early testers here didn't. I watched eegors youtube video on prospecting, and back in July, the woo-woo wand didn't need leather, but now it does. Seems kind of unfair that now I have to pay other players for something they didn't have to pay for and now the game is saying I have to!

Does iron spawn on the map like flint and limestone perhaps? Or do I need other skills to pan in the river for iron nuggets? If the game dev's are striving for realism, then adding a leather requirement where there never was early on isn't realistic.

You need to check the vendor stalls to see what you can sell for silver.

I understand there is that option. My question (and gripe) is why is there no way to find iron other than from buying it now when that wasn't neccessary before (no leather for the wand)?

wtf are you talking about. we always had to buy it at the start. how do you think all it happened? you are actually getting it for much less from a player.

No, there is no way. So either trade with other players for those, or buy from stalls. You can get silver by selling stuff to NPCs, and that's where most silver comes from.
Players who made first iron / boards / leather had to buy their materials from NPC

I'm surprised you are complaining about the leather aspect when you need 3 bars of iron to make a smelter, it's not like you mine straight iron bars from the ground. Everyone has to put up some silver before starting to make iron bars. I don't know why you think early beta testers got such a free ride simply because they didn't need one piece of leather (I don't know if that's true or not, but it's not even the biggest hurdle towards smelting iron)? And it's not really a catch-22 because silver can be obtained through game mechanics. It's not like you are forced to put up RL money to advance further.

Ok, I was wrong then. Eegors video shows him crafting a woo-woo wand and it didn't require the leather it does now. I just got tanning and realized I needed iron for the tub, which is why I posted. I haven't learned how to smelt yet. I'll head to town then and see whats wanted and start doing that as you folks suggest.

Thanks for getting back to me quick though. :)
