Lean to / homestead confusion

I'm out in the wild with no homestead and I want to get back to "Boston" with all my items. I just built myself a lean to but it doesn't let me teleport with my stuff. What am I missing here?

Probably to make the leanto your homestead. Right-click it to get the option to do so.

Ah that was simple, thanks. What if I already have a homestead though? Would I have to destroy it before I set a new one?

The old lean-to or claim will remain where it is, but you will lose track of it since you are transfering your homestead to the new lean-to (you will no longer be able to port to the old one). Best done if you don't care about losing what you have at your original camp site.
