They get all red. This is a common visual cue across the board.

Sleds don't take damage from use tho.

If you're unsure try repairing one, if it's damaged you will start repairing it if you got oakum in your inventory or you get an error message that you lack Oakum. If it's not damaged your character will simply move towards the canoe with nothing further happening.
