pressure to dumb the game down?

Postby iamah » Mon Nov 12, 2012 1:29 pm

I love this game, but I'm pretty sure there will be a huge pressure to dumb down the game.

When money gets in the equation people will pressure to make it "friendly", like every single game out there.

I think the greatest virtue of this game is because it's ***** wild and most companies don't have balls to try this. They want to please the audience.

Are the devs thinking about this, is there anyone concerned this could eventually dumb the game?

Even if we at Paradox pressured the devs to dumb the game down I'm pretty sure they wouldn't ever listen ;)
I never managed to figure out something clever for my signature on Paradoxplaza, and I doubt I'll do it here either.

Not concerned. This game is niche (and Paradox picked it up full well knowing it's a niche game), dumbing it down to mass appeal would completely destroy the regular playerbase. If they'd intended to do so, it would already have been done (some **** in the game is already mighty complicated).
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

Is the game really that complex? Idk. We can't really design something that we consider strictly inferior in some vain hope of making the game more accessible, I don't think.

Also, Paradox develops things like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearts_of_Iron_III. ;)

It's not too complex, it's a nice build up, picking stuff, crafting and evolving. It's a good sense of evolution.

As a new player leveling up I miss more in-game information. Example: clicking on a proficiency name would open a small window with the info we find on the wiki. Maybe temporally a link to open the wiki page on the browser, as it happens with the buy silver link above the minimap.

I think gluttony and understanding it scares a few people off.

These sort of things really do need tutorials.

Gluttony is the only "complex" issue. In and of itself the concept isn't too bad, but it's one that develops multiple layers of complication. Mostly when it comes to picking which purity types to grind for crops. That's a lot of information to crunch for the average person so a lot either try to raise all or mostly ignore it.

They should make the game less boring, I don't really want to pay for a foraging simulator.
Please make paving and houses less expensive, building stuff is a hassle for such little reward.

paving less expensive? What's so expensive about it? You take a stone and pave a tile. It's 3 seconds? 8 if you count in chipping the stone out of the boulder.

little reward? What kind of reward you expect? You build stuff because you need it. If the need is not worth the effort - apparently you don't need it.

What's so expensive about houses? Nails? They are easy to get once you are set up.

Well, if there are no expensive things then in a week you will be bored anyway because you will have nothing to do.

I think a big problem with the gluttony is the time pressure, frantically scrambling to find a food that'll push the right stat the right amount (don't want to go for an overkill and waste higher tier food) isn't exactly newbie friendly.
