Claim, Scents, House, Combat

Postby wizcas » Mon Nov 12, 2012 12:14 pm

Heya again :)

New questions arose - couldn't find informations about those topics - but maybe the answers prevent a couple of topics here:

1. Why should I claim land? - I claim with the "Stake Claim" Item right?
2. If I understand correctly: Torchposts and Braziers are defense buildings, right? Do they attack anyone who is not my kin right away?
3. What is thise "scent" I read about so often here?

4. How do I give my alt my house as "home"?
4a. Can others enter my house? I assume yes, they can - until I have locksmithing...
4aa. Can locked items be destroyed or lockpicked?
4b there is a small (2 tiles) grey area in my house next to the wooden planks west of entrance - what is this for?

5. How do I approach combat - don't want get killed by snakes anymore *sigh*
5a. I have self-defense and I guess I have to train backalley pugilism right?
5b. What basic humours will allow me a 70+% chance to survive the combat against crickets, rabbits, snakes?

1. So people can't steal as easy from you. If they do steal you will have a scent to get revenge or have someone else get it for you
2. They will attack anyone on committing crime on your land. You will need multiple layers of walls to get them to work properly. Devs are fixing this problem.
3. Someone commits a crime they will leave evidence. you take this track them if they are online or track them back to their homestead. From there you can summon them if its a summonable scent.

4. You can give rights to a alt by using the claim stone and matching the colors with what you have you alt set on.
anyone can enter a house but not many will in fear of getting trapped.
lock items can be destroyed
the tiles are for a stove

5. Snakes are not worth the time. they have no real use. If you want snake gear then look in logs and trunks.
you don't have 2 but it will help to get all the combat skills
you can kill every animal but a bear at 15 humors.

for crickets, rabbits and turkey use guard walk up punch/thrust/uppercut. they will swing back at you. walk away and wait for them to advance on you. when they get close attack again and repeat until they are dead

killing deer is even easier. they hardly ever attack back. around 15 humors use wander walk up attack and then stay right next to the deer until it stops moving, hit again and repeat till dead.

1. If you don't claim the land then anyone can just walk in and take / destroy anything. With claim they would need special skills and would leave scents. Also, unclaimed land can just be claimed by someone else and then you are f-ed
2. torchposts and braziers will shoot at perpetrators and damage their black bile, if those perps performed enough criminal actions on your claim. As an example, 3 vandalism actions are enough to activate braziers and torchposts.
3. scents are visible as exclamation marks on the ground when you have tracking turned on. You can use those scents to track criminals, or find their homestead, or stolen items. With scents also evidence comes, which lets you summon perpetrator at THEIR homestead, even when they are offline, which lets you murder him.

4. You don't give alts homes. You can only give them permissions to your claim. To do that you must have your alt on your kin list, assign a color to it, and set permission at the claim stone to this color. 2 characters cannot share the same lean-to / claim as homestead, so your alt would have to build his own lean-to on your claim.
4a. Yes, they can, and I think locksmithing cannot be used to lock houses, only gates
4aa. Lockpicked - no. Destroyed - yes
4b That's a hearth area, you can place stove there.
