How did I get madness level 8, from 0, while asleep in a bed???

Are you sure you didn't go to bed with a madness of 8? You will always appear as if you have madness 0 in the client when you first log in, for it then to be adjusted up to the correct value when it loads/checks the player data on the server a few seconds later.

Yeah I had been online for hours, had madness 0, logged back on just now, many hours later, madness 8

No I wasnt sleeping with a bear, but I had madness 0!!!

Hmm you might have a better chance of finding out if you pm a dev, i know you think they're trolls, and to some extent they can be at times, but that's your best bet to find out what happened exactly.
