Do trees respawn?

Just as the title says, do trees respawn or are the permamently cut down?

Gone forever. We will, however, be able to plant trees and grow them sometime in the future.

Use a shovel to make it easier. But, if you just leave the stump they will turn into hollow stumps and you can forage them later for goodies...really cool feature when you start clear cutting forests.
