so far clicking doesn't do anything for me.

Could it be that you have your monitor color depth set to 16 bits? That is known to cause clicking issues.

Why would that be a problem? Does salem utilise color based unprojecting?

In order to know what you clicked on, the client draws each object in a unique color, then checks what color is on the pixel you clicked on, and maps that back to the object. If it cannot draw in the color depth it expects, then, the colors will corrupt and won't map back correctly. It's a rare problem, of course, since pretty much noone uses less than 24 bit color these days.
