I agree with that but when welcoming newbies in a town I'm more worried that they're gonna throw their steelpickaxe in the river or loose the feasting set while trying to fight a deer. Or use a teasel on Brown Pants. Or putting salts on the fields. Or using the silver to make nails. Or killing the turkeys by mistake. Or setting the whole on fire. You know, fun stuff.

Don't listen to the entire "You are only safe when you join a town!" bull. You are not safer in a town; it only means people have to use more resources to get inside.

Here is what you should follow and abide by when considering "Will I be robbed today." creed.

I. Personal claim. If you have this then you just knocked out a bigger portion than you would think of folk who would rob you blind. It is not even theft due to it not being claimed. ^.- 50% of folk can now not rob you. (Not worth it in their eyes.)

II. Fence. Even a stick fence will work in this regard; but work towards a split-rail fence to boost up your scrub defense status. 55% of folk can now not rob you.

III. Torches. Spam those torches and 75% of folk do not care to see what you even have.

IV. Stone hedge and braziers. 80% of folk do not care to even try now.

V. Brick wall and a town claim. 90% of folk do not care to even try.

Now for a fun fact: the percentage is just people wandering around looking for cheap crimes from folk who do not take precautions. Anyone can drop a town claim on your personal claim or a waste claim on your town claim to ***** with you and rob you. Most don't which is why there are percentages. Look like you are not worth it and have low quality **** laying about and you'll make most keep on walking. You should read Shrimp's guide to get an idea of how most use crime as an advantage for goods and what they avoid due to time wasting.

Though as an all time incentive remember this, and it comes from H&H, YOU ARE NEVER SAFE ANYWHERE. If I want to burn your claim to the ground then I damn will do as I please. The best way to not attract these folk is to make it less enjoyable in general to burn down and therefor less likely to get their rocks off on it.

My two cents at least bud. Just have fun. : )

..and be paranoid.
