Okay, is this a fire you made on a pile of 4 sticks? If so, you won't get a window opening; you'll walk to the fire and stop, but you are now 'using' the fire and you can cook anything that requires only a fire to cook.

If you made a fireplace with stones, you should have gotten a small window showing 4 inventory slots, and two bars, one for fuel remaining and one for coals remaining when you right clicked and walked up to it. You can then do any fire recipes you have, or you can put things in the inventory slots to bake; crabs or grass wrapped foods. The window might be somewhere on the edge of your screen or maybe you just didn't notice it. Try making your window bigger if you can.
