Join a Town
Pro: Plenty of help, infrastructure set up already/easy to assemble as a group, be able to help with whatever they need in exchange for help if i need it, defenses.
Con: Someone will want your stuff, static, very obvious.

Be a Hermit
Pro: Easy to move around, minimal effort to maintain, easy to hide.
Con: setting things up is work, defenses are more work, fields are too much work if i keep on the move.

Sign the Treaty
Pro: Less highly developed players to one shot and kill you for laughs, may impart their wisdom upon you if you ask nicely.
Con: Money, Anti-treaty people killing you just for signing it.

Learn Russian
Pro: Vodka, Russians might not kill you just cause.
Con: If someone catches you speaking it your on a hit list for life.

tbh it's so hard to say anything about treaty - tribe uses so many sockpuppets, and constantly pushes its members to perform a vision quests by posting weird crap on forums, so it's hard to find out if anything at all is true. You can expect this post to trigger plenty of responses vigorously convincing the treaty is great. Mostly coming from the tribe authorities or some people with 3 posts, all of which praising the tribe.

Live Free, or Die.

Give yourself the opportunity to explore everything the game offers, then, if you still want to play you will have plenty of opportunities to try those other things.

On the other hand, just go with what sounds like fun. If you die, get betrayed, or find yourself as a slave, consider that just part of the game and move on to some other possibility.

If you really want to choose one thing now, I'd say Learning Russian would be the best use of your real life time.

Probably the first thing you should do is edit you original thread with the expanded options outlined here and then ask a moderator to delete this duplicate thread :)

edit: lol, Potjeh messed it all up! Thanks Obama :(

Topics merged, the resulting mess is your punishment for double posting.

Pro: mostly better defence - especially on hours your are not online, synergies
Con: everything depends on: a) organisation of the town, b) attitude of you and your town-mates

Pro: You decide everything
Con: either move and stay small or settle to become bigger. Settling -> much work

Con: Money, Anti-treaty people killing you just for signing it.

Pro: If anybody annoys you, you just threaten him to call in Binks - or: just call in Binks ¦] ; Salem becomes Farmville if you are industrious enough, you can take your time building stuff/raising your biles
"Con": You have to obey some rules. Btw. Treaty does not cost money anymore

Con: If someone catches you speaking it your on a hit list for life.

Pro: you will raise your value to the market, because you will known a language not everybody knows; russians will tend to talk first
Con: Somebody could mistake you for a russian

I live as a hermit.

The pros is you can design your base as you like.
Don't have to share your food, and hard work.
Don't have to rely on other people doing work.
Don't have to worry about people slacking off more then you
Don't have to worry about bad relations resulting in betrayal

The con is clearly

Much more hard work, as you do most things yourself
Loneliness if you have the need for a community

After you built yourself a solid defense the need for hard work is much lesser though.
With 60+ biles i log in about 1-2 hours per day, just gluttoning, getting materials for food and socialise in Boston.

Con: Sodomy (not the good kind). Keep in mind that the injuns are a primitive race, they do not use lubricant.
Con: Forced to live on a tiny slice of the map that is running rampant with crime due to overpopulation and tribal incompetence.
Con: Forced to watch injuns eat babies for fun.
Con: By being associated with the Tribe, you align yourself with notorious turncoats like Colesie, Vigilance, and Shill (Sitting Bull / Trenial) who will likely sell you out for their own benefit.
Con: More highly developed players to one shot and kill you for laughs.

ad Sodomy: Thats what Mushi does to Bunnies.
ad tiny slice of the map & overpopulation: 200 ppl / (50000x1000 sq) = 1 ppl / 250000 sq ( 1 Town = 10000 sq)
ad forced to watch: Only if you read Mushis postings
ad align with turncoats: only for Mushi & 7-8 other tribe-haters. The other 192++ don't give a shipment on that.
ad oneshot & kill for laughs: only if they dare to risk their character ...which in effect does not do anybody.
